For good health and safety, it is necessary to maintain your home during all the seasons. The summer is a great time to prepare your home for the upcoming cooler and harsher months, with lingering warm temperatures and hours of daylight.

For a smooth transition from summer to fall, do the following before summer ends.

Fix Drainage Problems in Your Yard

Performing this task near the end of the summer is necessary if you reside in an environment with lots of rain. Summer storms might cause minor flooding or external cracks. If you live in a snowy region, water seepage into foundation cracks may freeze and thaw again during the winter, resulting in significant long-term damage.

Standing water in your yard is likely to worsen if you don’t do something about it in summer. Here are a few things to do with drainage:

1. Clear your gutters and downspouts.

2. Clear and dispose of debris in your yard.

3. Create a creekbed to divert water away from any areas of your yard that are particularly vulnerable to flooding.

4. Complete necessary renovations to your drainage system to prevent water from seeping into your home or causing foundation problems.

Pests Control

Creepy-crawlies are one of the most common nuisances of the summer months, regardless of whether you want to DIY or hire a pro. To avoid creatures finding a haven in your home, here are a few things to do before the winter sets in:

1. Inspect the weatherstripping and repair any fractures in your doorways.

2. Use human and eco-friendly fumigation.

3. Clean all indoor and outdoor garbage cans that have accumulated odors and pest-attracting residue throughout the summer.

4. Check every nook and cranny of your environment for signs of infestations.

5. Consider hiring an exterminator as soon as possible if you notice evidence of pests or roaches beyond the limits.

Also, you may visit a local pest control shop for guidance and assistance.

Take Care of Your Yard

Even if you’re not a very outdoorsy person, your yard still needs some TLC from time to time. The end of the summer is a great opportunity to do some outdoor maintenance.

Do the following to give your yard the love it deserves:

  • Keep large tree branches away from your home by trimming.
  • Renew your yard by removing weeds, dead plants, and other debris.
  • Add new grass seed after aerating and fertilize for fast germination.
  • Pay attention to your driveways and walkways — the end of summer is a great time to seal any cracks and prevent them from spreading further during the winter months.

Don’t Forget Your HVAC System

HAVC is the degree of convenience and luxury in every home. Therefore every piece of your HVAC unit needs constant checks, at least once or twice a year by a professional. Even if your air conditioner is blowing cold air like a champ, what about your furnace?

Engage the services of a professional specialist to inspect your HVAC units and determine their capacity for the upcoming seasons. When your HVAC unit is efficient, it saves money and protects you from some typical domestic hazards.

A good time to clean up your vents is now since this will enhance the efficiency of your unit and lower allergy levels.

Keep an Eye on Your Weatherproofing

Summer is known for rolling thunderstorms and tropical weather systems, depending on where you live. End-of-summer maintenance is an excellent opportunity to identify potential trouble spots before problems like water leaks arise due to extreme weather. Take note of the following:

  • Make sure there are no leaks or missing shingles on the roof.
  • Inspect the weatherstripping around doors and windows.
  • Check your insulation to see if any spots could use a boost.
  • Think of installing a storm door if you don’t have one.

If you don’t keep up with your seasonal maintenance, you’ll waste time, money, and peace of mind in the long run. Take action now and smile all season long.
